Simply Electrical Contractors

Solar Connected Safely to the Rest of the Installation

A solar PV system is only as good as the electrical work behind it. The panels produce direct current, an inverter converts it for use in the property, and the system has to be connected to the consumer unit with the correct isolation, protection and labelling so that it is safe to live with and safe to work on.

Simply Electrical Contractors assesses the existing installation before a system is connected, including the consumer unit, earthing and the capacity of the supply. The work covers DC and AC cabling, isolators, inverter connection, generation metering and battery storage where the project includes it.

Solar generation has to be notified to the network operator, and larger systems need approval before they are connected. Export payment schemes also have their own certification requirements, so these points are discussed at the outset. The completed installation is tested, certified and explained at handover.

What to expect

A Clear Route From Enquiry to Completion

Details vary by property and service, but the process is built around assessment, explanation and appropriate testing.

01

Assess the Property

Review the supply, consumer unit, earthing and the planned position of the equipment.

02

Connect the System

Install the cabling, isolators and protection, and connect the inverter and any battery.

03

Test and Certify

The installation is tested and certified, and the network notification is dealt with.

Common questions

Useful Information Before You Enquire

For advice about a specific property, contact the team with the postcode and job details.

01Does my consumer unit need upgrading for solar?

Sometimes. The board needs a spare way and suitable protection for the solar circuit, so older units are assessed before the system is connected.

02Can a battery be added later?

Often, yes. It is easier if the inverter and cable routes are chosen with a battery in mind, so say at the start if it is a possibility.

03Who tells the network operator?

The installer notifies the distribution network operator. Small systems are notified after installation; larger ones need approval beforehand.

04Will I be paid for electricity I export?

Export tariffs are offered by energy suppliers and have their own eligibility rules, including certification of the installation. Check these before committing to a system.
